Good to know: What does ridesharing insurance cover?

Basic auto insurance in Ontario doesn’t include coverage for paid passengers. If you drive for Uber or Lyft, you’ll need ridesharing insurance. Here’s some things it covers:

Coverage for paid passengers

When you log in to your Uber or Lyft app, your ridesharing insurance kicks in, so you can drive paying customers with complete coverage under your Uber insurance, or a separate or extended rideshare coverage.

If you’re sued or liable

There’s coverage for lawsuits if you cause property damage or accidentally hurt someone while you’re driving for Uber, Lyft or another rideshare service. Coverage includes legal costs and court awarded damages.

Health and medical

You can be covered for medical expenses beyond what’s provided by government health insurance – including rehab, physiotherapy, attendant care and more – if you or your passengers are hurt in a car accident.

There’s coverage if you cause any property damage while driving for Uber, Lyft or another rideshare service.

Accident forgiveness

Hey, everyone make mistakes. If you have this coverage as part of your ridesharing insurance, your rates won’t increase after your first at-fault accident.
