Someone was hurt while on my property. Am I covered by insurance?
If a visitor, delivery person, mailman or anyone else is hurt while in your home or on your property, your home insurance policy includes liability coverage to pay for court settlements and cover your legal fees, if you are sued.
What do I do if I find someone injured on my property?
- Ask if the person is OK. Try to assess how serious the injury is.
- Call 911 right away if the person is unconscious, if there is significant bleeding, or if they’re not breathing for any reason. Apply first aid or CPR if it’s appropriate for the injury and if you are qualified.
- If it seems like the injury is significant, or if you’re unsure, don’t try to move them. Wait for paramedics to arrive.
Once it’s been determined that an ambulance is needed:
- Stay close. Remain with them until help arrives and don’t try to move them.
- Provide paramedics with as many details as you’re able to. This helps to prevent mistaking symptoms and misdiagnosing injuries.
- Feel free to apologize. In Ontario, an apology is not an admission of liability and won’t affect your insurance.
- Try to get photos of the injury and the area where the injury took place.
- You don’t need to offer your insurance details unless someone asks.
- Call us or the insurance company we placed you with as soon as possible to let them know what happened.
Once it’s been determined that an ambulance is not needed:
- Offer ice, and help them get comfortable if the injury us not severe.
