Ontario RV or motorhome insurance: What’s covered?
If you’re driving an RV or motorhome, you need to have a specific insurance policy which would usually include the following coverages:
Third party liability
This coverage protects you if you cause property damage or hurt someone. If you’re sued, you also have coverage for legal fees along with court awarded damages and more.
Accident benefits
If you’re hurt in an accident, insurance pays for lost income and childcare, in addition to medical costs beyond what’s provided by government healthcare while you recover.
Direct compensation
If you’re in an accident, but are not at-fault damages to your RV or motorhome are covered for repairs and replacement cost.
Uninsured auto
If you’re hit by an uninsured driver you can recover damages as if they were fully insured. Insurance helps you get back on your feet.
Other RV coverage options to consider
Driving an RV or motorhome means you have a lot of coverage options. Here’s a few things to think about:
Collision coverage
This covers physical damage to your RV or motorhome from a collision with another vehicle or object.
Comprehensive coverage
Beyond collisions, your comprehensive coverage can pay for other kinds of damage to your RV – like fire, theft, vandalism, storm damage and more.
Replacement cost
If you need to replace your RV or motorhome due to a claim, you will receive the purchase price or current market value to buy a new vehicle.
Good to know: Common questions about RV insurance
Is my RV covered under my home insurance?
Not automatically. Most RVs are excluded from a standard home insurance policy. An RV that you drive needs to be insured separately like a car. If your RV is a trailer, your home policy might exclude it. Even if it doesn’t, you need to let your broker know that you are adding it as it can increase the total value to the policy. There will be an additional premium.
Is RV insurance mandatory?
In Ontario, all motor vehicles are required to be registered and insured, so if you own a motorhome, campervan, or other RV that you drive, yes, you do need insurance.
Are the belongings in my RV/motorhome covered if I get into an accident?
Generally, but there are limits depending on the level of coverage you choose. With a basic RV policy, you may be able to claim up to $5,000 for your belongings. If you choose a higher level of RV coverage, you can increase the dollar limits, and further protect your belongings.
