What does plumbing insurance cover?
Plumbing insurance starts with the basics like liability, tools, property and vehicle coverage. Have a closer look:
Commercial general liability
This protects your business if your work leads to property damage or causes an injury to a customer or someone else. If you use subcontractors they should have this coverage too.

Frequently asked questions about plumbing insurance
How much is plumbing insurance in Ontario?
Premiums for plumbing contractors vary widely depending on a number of factors, including:
- Whether you work on commercial or residential plumbing
- Whether you work on new builds, repairs or renos
- Your past claims history
- Your experience in the business
- Your annual revenues
- Where your business is located
- How many employees you have
For a small plumbing business with no office or vehicles to insure, premiums can start around $900 a year. Talk to one of our contractors insurance specialists for a more detailed quote.
What is included in plumbing insurance?
Every plumbing business is different, but the following coverages are fairly standard for the trade:
- Commercial general liability coverage, to protect against lawsuits
- Tools and equipment coverage, to protect your wrenches, torches, snakes, benders and cutters
- An installation floater protects any pipe and plumbing fixtures before and during installation
- Commercial auto insurance, to protect your van, even if it’s your personal van
- If your plumbing business has an office or shop, you would also need commercial property coverage, including contents coverage for your business supplies and inventory.
What kind of claims should I watch out for as a plumber?
The obvious answer is water damage claims. All day, every day, you make connections or you fix connections. If one of those connections fails, even years after the fact, your plumbing business could be held responsible for the resulting water damage. Fire claims are also something to be aware of if you or your staff are using torches in tight spaces. The third most common claim for plumbers is stolen tools, usually from unlocked vehicles or work sites.
