Frequently asked questions about roofing insurance
How much is roofing insurance?
The cost depends on the type of roofing you’re doing, the size of your business, whether you need coverage for a workshop or office and company vehicles, and more.
Asphalt residential roofers can get coverage for their business and tools often for under $2,000 a year. But your exact price will depend on your business and its unique needs.
Regardless of what kind of roofing you’re doing, we’ll find you great insurance at a competitive price. Doing commercial roofing that involves hot work with a kettle? We have a specialized insurance program just for you. Ask us for details.
Why do I need roofing insurance?
Roofers need insurance more than just about any other type of contractor. Claims can arise from water damage if roofs are improperly installed, or fire if your crew works with hot tar or torch on membrane. Even if damage isn’t your fault, you could be on the hook for legal fees to defend your business against a false claim.
Do I need commercial auto coverage if I use my personal truck to transport materials to job sites?
If you or your employees use your own personal vehicles to transport roofing tools and materials to job sites, we’ll make sure you’re properly covered. Personal auto insurance doesn’t usually cover your vehicle for business use, so issues may arise if you ever have to make a claim and don’t have the right protection. Business (commercial) auto insurance can cover you and your team for business and personal use on the same vehicle, and it’s more affordable than you might think.
Do I need an installation floater?
As a roofer, you likely install tens of thousands of dollars worth of shingles or other roofing materials in a given week. If you have a shop then those materials might be covered under a commercial property policy while they are there. But not while they are being installed or awaiting installation at a job site. An installation floater fills this gap in coverage.
What if I operate my roofing business from home?
Many roofing contractors don’t have a physical office or shop. That doesn’t mean you don’t need insurance. If you run your business from home, the good news is that you don’t need property insurance for a building, so insurance will likely be much more affordable. But what about the shingles, tools and other roofing supplies that you keep at your home? Most home insurance policies only cover a very small amount for business contents. Talk to one of our contractors insurance specialists about coverage tailored to your home-based roofing business.
