Protect your most valuable technological assets
Medical clinics and laboratories invest heavily in technology to better serve their patients. When shopping for insurance for your healthcare facility, it’s important that medical devices valued over $2,500 be listed individually on the policy. Some coverage is available as part of a business contents policy, but the best way to ensure you’re covered for these valuable assets is to list them separately. One of our commercial insurance brokers would be happy to advise you.

Frequently asked questions about health professional insurance:
How much is insurance for health professionals in Ontario?
It is very difficult to quote prices for health professional insurance as there are so many different healthcare-related businesses in the province, ranging from youth counselors to psychotherapists to chiropractic clinics to medical laboratories. Each practice has its unique risks and premiums would depend on factors such as:
- The exact nature of your practice (for example a surgeon will pay more than a physiotherapist)
- Your experience in the field
- Whether you are insuring a physical clinic and where it is located
- Your practice’s annual revenues
- How many employees you have
- The value of your technological assets
- Your past claims history
What coverages are recommended for health professionals?
- Healthcare businesses, like every other business, require commercial general liability (CGL) insurance to protect against potential legal action arising from injuries to third parties or damage to their property that occur at your clinic or as a result of your business operations.
- Unlike many other businesses, healthcare businesses require malpractice insurance, which is also known as professional liability or errors and omissions. This covers legal action arising from bad advice or poor professional judgment.
- Any clinic also needs commercial property insurance to protect the building, if owned, any improvements made to a rented space, and the contents of clinic. Desks, chairs, computers, examination tables, massage tables, lab equipment, tongue depressors and filing cabinets.
- Business interruption coverage is typically part of a commercial property policy and pays for lost income if the clinic needs to close due to an insured loss like a fire, burglary or vandalism.
- If you rent space for your clinic, your CGL insurance should include coverage for tenants legal liability, which pays if you as a tenant are responsible for damage to the rented property. Ask your broker to be sure this coverage is part of your insurance package.
- If you keep client data including credit card information on a laptop or in the cloud, you could benefit from cyber insurance.
Does my practice need malpractice insurance if we already have commercial general liability?
Yes. 100%. You need both CGL and malpractice coverage. Commercial general liability coverage specifically excludes claims arising from bad advice or poor professional judgment. And even if you don’t make this kind of mistake, if your patient or client files a claim, you could face tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees even if you are not found liable in the end.
To clarify the difference between CGL and malpractice insurance, a CGL claim might arise from a patient slipping on a wet floor in your waiting room or tripping over a carpet while walking to an exam room. A malpractice claim, on the other hand, could be the result of a naturopath recommending a supplement that leads to an allergic reaction, or a surgeon accidentally causing nerve damage during an operation.
