What is specified perils coverage?
At a glance: Specified perils coverage, as the name suggests, covers you against risks or perils that you have named or specified beyond those provided in your standard auto insurance policy. This option is also referred to as named perils coverage.
What is protected by specified perils coverage?
Here are some examples of risks that you might choose to be protected against:
- Fire
- Theft
- Damage caused by attempted theft
- Lightning
- Hail
- Windstorm
- Rising water
- Earthquake
- Riot
Depending on where you live, you may never need protection against some of the items in this list but can name the ones that you are concerned about.
Vandalism and broken glass are not covered by specified perils coverage but would be covered by comprehensive coverage if you added that option to your policy.
Who needs specified perils coverage?
This is an optional coverage for vehicle owners in Ontario but if you are leasing or financing a vehicle, the leasing company or lender may ask you to take comprehensive coverage instead of specified perils.
