Company Overview

Chieftain’s roots go back as far as 1887, when the Travelers-acquired Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company was established.

Chieftain, whose motto is Sometimes, simple is better, offers standardized, comprehensive coverage for the most common types of claims; ideal for customers with uncomplicated insurance requirements, Chieftain may be a good fit for you if:

  • You haven’t filed an insurance claim for several years
  • You have a driving record that is free from accidents and infractions
  • You don’t live in an area that is prone to flooding or wildfires
  • You don’t have any gaps in your coverage

Chieftain keeps their rates competitive by offering simple insurance solutions; updating their policyholders’ information and premiums monthly.

Chieftain Advantages

If you rarely file insurance claims but still want to be prepared for the unexpected, then you probably don’t need a complicated insurance policy with many customized features. Chieftain’s insurance policies are streamlined to provide affordable, easy to understand coverage.

Chieftain’s competitive strengths include:

  • Monthly contract: Unless you cancel your policy, it’s automatically renewed monthly. Your driving history is also updated every month, so for example, if a speeding ticket drops off your record, or you become eligible for one of Chieftain’s many discounts, you don’t have to wait for a policy renewal date to see the savings on your monthly premium.
  • Ontario only: Chieftain Insurance coverage is exclusive to Ontario residents. As a policyholder, you will be insured by a company that has a unique understanding of Ontario-specific laws and considerations.
  • High liability limits: Your liability insurance is one of the most important types of coverage that you carry, protecting you from the financial burden that would be yours if you’re found to be at fault in a car accident or an accident that occurs on your property. All of Chieftain’s insurance policies include $2 million in liability coverage, helping to ensure that your assets are protected.

Insurance Products

Chieftain may be a budget-friendly option, but that doesn’t mean that their policies leave you vulnerable to financial strain if you need to file a claim. Some of Chieftain’s enhanced coverage limits and policy features include:

Auto Insurance

  • $2 million minimum liability coverage
  • Higher limits on accident benefits

Home, Tenants, & Condo Insurance

  • $2 million minimum liability coverage
  • No coverage limit for fine arts, silverware, and computers

Precise Painting

For those of us on a budget especially after covid doing a number of many of us financially, this company doesn’t care if youre a day late. They want it now! Offer me discounts for being a valued customer and 2 days later cancel on me. I always paid and worked things out but money trumps customer relations!

I am happy with Chieftain but I have to leave the company

Two years ago, I was bumped by a car and Chieftain readily came to my assistance. I was so happy then. My 2 cars and home insurance were bundled and the rate was good. Now we added another car and my monthly premium were still competitive. The insurance was renewable every month and lately I noticed that the insurance rate is going up, unstoppable. I looked around for cheaper insurance company with the same coverage until I found one. My renewal is on March 10, 2020 and I regret to leave this company that I initially come to like but somehow giving me a hard time in the past months…

Terrible

As a young adult, my insurance was already astonishing. My first quote was $340/month. Then, in the mail i got a letter saying rates were going up (no accidents/tickets/claims) to $388/month. 4 months later I received another letter saying rates were going up AGAIN (no accidents/tickets/claims) to $460 a month!! Lastly, I received this letter today after 3 months saying insurance was to go up again to $481/month. Ridiculous. They do not even give an explanation and it’s extremely difficult when you are on a strict budget already.

Get Ready for Constant Price Fluxuations

It seems every month or two I was getting a new policy card and my rate would go up $2, down $2, blah blah. Then came the letter that it was going up $26/mo. – through no fault of my own (no tickets or accidents). Cancelled my policy next day and went with another provider, who is saving me ~$70/mo!

Rate increases almost daily now

So I been with this company for 3 years now and they always increase their rates just because they can, for the last years alone I been having rate increase almost every month, recently I called them to get a quote to add another car in my policy and it was just inquiry to find in the next few days another mail telling me there’s a rate increase even though they just increased the rate a few days before.

I were notified that my auto insurance monthly rate was to increase by $14. No tickets accidents or any other sort of claim. Of course no explanation for the increase. This was only one of many increases within less than a calendar year. I did have 1 decrease of $2 during that calendar year however, it was only preparing me to to be hit 2 months later with the $14 increase.

Auto rate increased for no reason

My wife and I were notified that our auto insurance monthly rate was to increase by $18 – from $212 to $230. No tickets accidents or any other sort of claim. Of course no explanation for the increase – perhaps a watchdog is needed. This followed an equally inexplicable increase on our home insurance as well. Anyway will be looking to move to another insurance provider.

Stay away from these Thieves

I bought a auto insurance from Chieftain, it started at Cad 270 a month later 343 then 397 with a 6 month period. I have no accident or tickets. I bought this policy through Buckley’s insurance location in new market Ontario

Scam

This is not fair insurance. They give you at first small premium and increase in time without any valid reason at all. Im so dissatisfied and i will cancel insurance to them

As a young driver on his own policy, chieftain’s rates were the best that I could find by far. The monthly contracts make it so the payments aren’t always consistent (I probably get new documents from them every couple months) but it’s a small price to pay for the rate. Also went through the claims process once with them with no issues. Everything was handled diligently and efficiently.
