The Facility Association is a unique insurer in that it is an unincorporated organization that operates as a not-for-profit company. The group is comprised of auto insurance providers from throughout Ontario, and its job is to maintain stability within the auto insurance market.

Ontario is one of nine provinces and territories that offer this service as Facility Association does not operate in provinces that already have mechanisms in place to provide auto insurance to all consumers who need it. Facility Association helps consumers by:

  • Offering high risk auto insurance to drivers who might not otherwise get it
  • Making sure auto insurance is available to help avoid uninsured motorist situations
  • Making it easy for consumers who can qualify for insurance to get it
  • Helping drivers to avoid the steep fines and penalties that come with not having auto insurance in Ontario

Facility Association has a physical presence in the form of a Board of Directors and an informational website, but its insurance coverage exists more as an idea than a product. Since Facility Association is not-for-profit, there is no need to constantly monitor premiums or worry about increasing corporate profitability.

Facility-association Strengths

The advantages that come with the work done by Facility Association are both obvious and not so obvious to consumers. While the premiums for Facility Association policies do tend to be more expensive than standard auto insurance, this sort of service is an excellent bridge product to help consumers abide by the insurance laws of Ontario while they look for replacement insurance that is not quite as expensive. The benefits of the work done by Facility Association include:

  • Everyone Can Be Insured – There are some very hard cases that would prevent a driver from being insured by any carrier, but those cases are few and far between. With Facility Association, high risk drivers who are rejected by every other carrier will find coverage that will help them to legally drive a vehicle on Ontario roads.
  • Reduction In Uninsured Motorists – An auto owner who abides by the law and carries the right amount of insurance can find themselves in a deep financial hole if they are struck by an uninsured driver. Facility Association recognises how unfair it is to law-abiding citizens to have to bear the financial brunt of being involved in an accident with uninsured drivers, and that is what makes Facility Association insurance so important.
  • Maintaining Market Stability – Facility Association gives insurance options to high risk drivers who might otherwise take risks that could significantly raise the cost of insurance in Ontario. The destabilising effect of high risk drivers is offset by the coverage offered through Facility Association. The work done by Facility Association helps to keep the insurance market stable, and allows law-abiding citizens to enjoy reasonable insurance premiums.

Insurance Products

Any licensed insurance broker in Ontario can write policies for Facility Association insurance products. Consumers do not need to look for any special office or phone number to get coverage. They can simply check in with their favourite insurance broker. Facility Association offers an effective roster of insurance products that can help any driver to stay legally on the road.

Uninsured Automobile Funds

Facility Association is obliged to administer the Uninsured Automobile Funds pool of money that is used to help insured drivers offset the financial burden created by uninsured drivers. It is a fund that the various Ontario insurance companies contribute to, and it is maintained as part of the work done by Facility Association.

Why You Would Need Facility Association

The most common reasons people require the services of Facility Association include:

  • A poor driving record or a new driver with no record
  • A substantial history of making claims
  • Owning a vehicle known to be a high risk on the road
  • A persistent record of reckless or dangerous driving citations
  • A documented inability to maintain insurance payments
  • A history of accidents

Risk Sharing Pools

The Risk Sharing Pools are options set up by Facility Association for brokers to use if they are not able to write auto insurance for a high risk driver. When an Ontario broker is unable to take on a high risk driver’s policy, they will transfer that policy to the Risk Sharing Pools where the driver must complete a different type of insurance application.

Stay away from this company

The worst Insurance company. I insured my motorcycle with this company and I canceled it after 6 days. They deducted my cancelation fee and the days I’ve used. I was told that ill get my refund after 2 weeks. Now its 2 months and they haven’t refunded anything and worst, they took another payment on my account even if i already canceled it. They are quick on getting my money but their service is really a nightmare.

Just happy to be riding

Even though I am an experienced rider in Germany here in Canada I have to start with an M1. Nobody but Facility would insure me. So I am happy to be riding again. The cost is fair considering the ‘newbie ‘ status, but I am hoping this will change soon after completing the M2 safety course. Receiving the actual policy took two months and so far no withdrawal of payments…make sure to keep the money in the account to not fall behind when it gets withdrawn. Overall, just happy to be riding again.

Extortionate Rates. Slow Service.

As a 58 year old experienced (in the UK since1982) motorcycle rider but only with a M1 licence here. Rates were ridiculous. $5000 per year. After 2 months I’ve still not received the policy and keep having to request monthly insurance coverage slips. After paying $800 up front their delay in processing meant that they debited me another $800 in April. Absolute gouging. Not impressed at all!!!!

Avoid Facility Insurance like the plague.

They are a heartless, soulless, lifeless insurance company that is everything you’ve ever heard and hated about insurance companies. They will cancel your policy at the slightest payment issue regardless of the issue and there is no course of action to contact them and refute. You are simply SOL.
I’d leave them 0 stars if I could.

With some tickets on record, no insurance record, m1, 25 years old, a 2008 gsxr750! There is no way you could think I’d get proper insurance but not a problem with these Guys! The quote is more than fair in my opinion! I’m so happy I’m insured! Will recommend to my friends! They have made my dream come True!

TD Meloche Monex not very nice

I was rear ended at around 50kms and my car pushed into the vehicle ahead of me, not my fault or the person in front. TD tried hard to low ball me for the damage, my car was totaled, once they told me the car was done they told me to return the rental and that I would have to purchase a new vehicle. They offered me far below what the car was worth until I said lawyer, they upped the offer by $4000.00 but I still had to return the rental. I asked how was I to go find a new one and get to work, they told me to rent a car at my expense. Had my car been repairable I could have kept the rental until it was out of the shop. I ended up having to buy another car and had to pay out of pocket around 6000.00$ for the almost exact same vehicle a couple of years newer, mileage was nearly the same. I had planned on keeping that car for another 4 or 5 years before buying another and had had some work done on it just the month before, it was a loaded vehicle all the bells and whistles, I ended up with a lesser car but 2 years newer. When I threatened a lawyer the woman came back and said that “this was only the first offer, no need for a lawyer” why wouldn’t they just offer me the correct amount in the first place, slimy company, could care less about it’s clients, $ is the bottom line. They also told me that my damaged laptop would have to be claimed through my home insurance, yup there is a $500.00 deductible on a laptop that was worth about $500.00. I was not at fault yet they treated me like I was a criminal not the victim. They did pay for the ambulance to take me to hospital, but would not pay my salary for the 3 days I was recovering and off work. They said I had to be off for 7 days or more before they would pay my discounted wages, 70% I think. We insure everything with them, 3 cars, our house, my motorcycle, skidoo and our 4×4. We really get no break in costs from them. Our house insurance is almost $2000.00 a year while my neighbor pays around 850.00$ a year, they can’t or won’t explain why we pay so much. So I am looking for a better less expensive company to take my nearly $6500.00 a year in insurance products. TD Meloche Monex does not treat it’s clients very well I am afraid. On top of all that the people I had to speak with were not very nice, they took a confrontational approach with me, one guy even telling me that he would never have offered me that much for my car and that I should be thankful and take the money it won’t get any better than what they offered me. I should have asked my lawyer to step in, even if it did cost me his fee. I did not sue the fellow who hit me from behind because it was a series of events that was out of all three vehicles control. I should have now that I look back on all that happened. That money would have come out of his pocket instead of mine. Live and learn I guess.

only ones to insure me

can’t really compare the prices with other companies as they were the only ones to insure me on my right hand drive. Every other place I called said no.Mitchell and whale made the application process fast, but it took a long time to get my paperwork from facility. Just happy to be able to drive my dream car.
