I hate Manulife. You upload the invoice, they don't pay, and don't write down the reason. They don't return your correspondence and it's almost impossible to reach them by phone. Waste of time for me:(
MANULIFE LTD COVERAGE IS A FARCE
It would take me hours upon hours of writing to describe to you the SHEER CHAOS and PURE HELL that MANULIFE/OTIP (Ontario Teacher’s Insurance Plan) have put me through. They refused my very legitimate LTD CLAIM which left me suing them and having no income for 5 years, during which time I had to resign from teaching and withdraw my pension (which I could only access a very small portion of) in order to pay $8000 I owed for mortgage payments. The bank then demanded the full mortgage of $150,000- which I didn’t have so I lost my house. I got it back – but it ended up costing me hundreds of thousands of dollars. I was in such bad shape by the time of the lawsuit, they managed to somehow slither around parts of my Collective Agreement (yes- lawyers fault I agree), and ended up weaseling out of their financial responsibilities- which has resulted in me losing over 2 million dollars. (I’m not done with them yet though, and will fight them until the day I die). Now, after 20 years of giving me the measly pittance of 60% of what my wages were 20 years ago, without even a one cent increase, no meds, glasses, dental or vision benefits (in addition to the 2 million they owe me) they suddenly decided after 20 years that they want to adhere to the Collective Agreement- and cut my benefits off on December 23 with a word of warning, claiming I was ‘eligible to retire’ … – despite not even having been employed for 20 years and not having a Teacher’s Pension. This is just a SLIVER of the nightmare. The harassment – daily, weekly, monthly via phone, mail, email, registered letters, got SO bad they had a second warning from my lawyer threatening another lawsuit AND a DEMAND letter from my doctors ordering them to cease ALL contact with me as they were at the root cause of an additional diagnosis of PTSD (and every time I see a letter from them- it STILL triggers everything again). Instead of giving me a lump sum payout, they purposefully put me on monthly benefits so they would be enabled to yield power over me with threats of terminating benefits constantly being hung over my head. As they told the MEDIATOR who relayed the message to me: “Tell her she might as well accept what we’re offering her, because otherwise we’ll just tie her up in court for the next 12 years and she’ll be broke anyways.”
I was SPEECHLESS and said, “MEDIATION??? THIS is how you define MEDIATION??? This is nothing short of EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL AND EXTORTION. I’m pretty much a fish in a barrel and you all have your loaded rifles pointing down into the water.” I could go on and on for HOURS… but suffice it to say they have completely and utterly destroyed the person I once was. They destroyed me emotionally, socially, physically, mentally, spiritually and financially to the point that I will NEVER, EVER, FULLY RECOVER. And they are still at it…daily… trying to break me. It is absolutely UNFATHOMABLE to me how our government is letting them get away with what they do to people. The entire insurance industry is nothing but a legalized money-laundering Ponzi scheme with their creation of the ‘concept’ of ‘re-insurers’. What an absolute joke. The rich get richer off of the backs of the labourers. If you ever want the full story… I’m in the process of writing up the formal complaint that will be hundreds of pages long for the Federal Privacy Commissioner’s Office, the Ontario Labour Board, the Canadian Human Rights Council, and 2 other agencies that are pending. I’ll send you a copy if you’re able to let me know how to get it to you. I think I should turn the report into a book manuscript after that, because believe me, it makes for some pretty unbelievable reading. AVOID MANULIFE AND IT’S MULTITUDE OF SUBSIDIARY COMPANIES AT ALL COSTS. They are like the Plague and will eat you alive from the inside out. If your employer gets group benefits from them (especially UNIONS) try to get out of it and get a private carrier if you can any way do so. Trust me on this one. Manuelife is the worst company in Canada
Manuelife is the worst company in Canada. They're a scam in a shell that refuses to do anything but ***** over customers in any capacity possible and make claims as difficult as they can. This entire company could go under tomorrow and it would only benefit Canadians. These pieces of trash approved my claims for weeks then suddenly decided they didn't want to anymore, even though I had $2000 in benefits left, leaving me $500 out of pocket. I'm considering legal action.

They just want your money and don’t concern attending your queries and needs.
Apparently mental health isn’t a real thing to them.
They will stonewall you until you’d rather go to work and be miserable and on the brink for the rest of your life. They are compounding my wife’s depression/anxiety situation 10 fold with their constant demeaning tasks. Trumped 3 doctors who said she was not able to work and suggested she’s perfectly fine to go back to her job….25 pounds under weight. They just want your money, will do anything not to pay out.

Frustrating experience
Tried to use their travel insurance and got absolutely stonewalled. They make you go round in circles with the provincial insurance system to avoid paying anything upfront. The information sent to me was unclear, lacking, and some statements such as they don’t know how provincial schemes treat claims, outright laughable. I really regret being insured with them.

Very confused why they make it so hard to get claims processed. Sent in a claim for runners and waiting 2 weeks before calling Manulife to ask them to process the ticket. Instead of processing they enter a support ticket and ask me to wait 2-3 business days. Fine, I wait the time period and guess what, the claim was still not processed and they didn’t ever give me a response for this “support ticket” that they sent. Call in again and the response is: let us file a “rush” ticket for you and you can expect an answer within 24 hours. As you can probably guess, they still didn’t resolve the problem. Claim remains unpaid after a month has gone by. Moral of the story is avoid this company if possible and make suggestions to your company to switch insurance providers if they are with this awful company.

If you think they will be there to help you while you are not well that takes many Dr visits/tests to figure out what is going on with your health, good luck. When your symptoms are complicated Manulife does not care about you getting better. They only add to the already stressful medical issues you may be going through. Manulife insurance is a false sense of security until you actually need them.
My experience in particular had to do with fainting spells after having a child. At the time I worked in a paper mill on the production line and passing out on a catwalk over the stock pits and press machinery or near any of the winding machinery I worked in and on would cause sever injury and/or death. I went through many emergency room visits, Dr and specialist appts that couldn’t pin point an exact cause but it was very real what was happening to me. One episode in particular, I was walking with my 6 Month old baby in my arms to go change her and my vision went spotty then black and I lost control of my arms and legs, dropped my baby and collapsed on top of her. I could feel her under me but couldn’t do anything about it. So thankful my husband was home to help us.
Manulife did not help us offset any percent of my 50% contribution to the family income while I was going to many appts to try and figure out why this was happening as we were led to believe Manulife would be there.
This is to anyone reading this who has this company as a group benefit provider, they will be great for dental and eye care needs like exam coverage etc and if you should have a health concern that you can provide physical medical evidence for like a broken bone. Please seek out and pay out of pocket for another company for all other insurance as it is not worth all the agony and frustration of fighting to prove you’re unwell so you can make your monthly payments all while trying to find out what is causing your unwellness like my fainting spells.
I hope this review can help just 1 person make a better choice on getting an insurance provider that will be there for them if they ever need. Or if you read my post this far as it sounds too familiar, I’m sorry that you are going through the same frustrating ordeal as I once did. Believe me you are not alone. I hope you can share your experience to others as well.

Go find another company to do business with, SISIP/Manulife will find any excuse to take you off disability.
No matter how much you pay into it, or what your injury is, they will find the slightest excuse to deny insurance payout.
They don’t want to pay out, even to veterans. Avoid them at all costs.
Sadly I was stupid and didn’t do my research, I assumed since they where heavily advertised within and work with the Canadian Military, they wouldn’t do everything in their power to destroy an injured vet financially. Boy was I wrong.
Worst insurance company ever
I was not aware of the 12 month rolling period for purchasing orthotics, I purchased a set 2 days prior to my 12 month term. I fought with them over many conversations and ended up needing to write a letter to appeal the situation. They told me it would be resolved in 2 weeks, after almost 2 months of constantly calling and getting an update on the status I got a letter in the mail that looked like an automated response. Pretty much an F-off letter, thanks for wasting your time. I was shocked my appeal was declined because of 2 days, and with covid times where we are all struggling, I would not be re-imbursed for the $500 because of my purchase date. Technically my orthotics arrived after the 12 month period, but shocked how incompassionate this company is, while a pain to deal with, which has come up more on multiple occasions. If you have a choice, do not choose Manulife!

Bought travel insurance back in 2016 and my body got acclimatized coming from a cold winter country to a blazing hot tropical get away, my nose has been bleeding for several days and had to go to the ER. called their cx service so i can get a claim on my hospital expenses, got all the receipts and invoices from the hospital only to be told that I would need to have an affidavit of a lawyer. You kidding me? They only want your money but makes up all these excuses so they wouldnt have to pay you.
Recently, i decided to give them another chance, bought a flipping $300 coverage for travel insurance for my wife, effing up til now I haven’t heard from them after we submitted our claim.

Worst place for a mortgage
Do not use Manulife! Terrible customer service. Reuested a mortgage discharge amount and had to call them 5 times for them to finally send it. Wouldn’t respond to our new bank we are dealing with for our new mortgage. Quoted us a price to payout our mortgage and raised it $5000 in less than 2 months. This bank is awful. Avoid it at all costs
