Frequently asked questions about business insurance

Premiums for business insurance vary more than for any other type of insurance, which makes sense when you consider a business can be anything from one person writing blogs from their home to a multinational corporation with thousands of employees.

Premiums for the smallest of businesses (no office, no vehicles) can start under $50 a month, whereas the largest businesses can sometimes pay hundreds of thousands a year in premiums. Factors that affect price include:

  • The annual revenues of the business
  • The number of employees
  • The industry (a circus is much more risky than a deli)
  • Whether the business has buildings to insure
  • Whether the business has vehicles to insure
  • The business’ experience and claims history

Every business, no matter how small, should have commercial general liability insurance, and even for a home-based business, coverage for its business assets like computers, supplies, tools and inventory. With businesses doing more and more business online and storing customer information electronically, cyber insurance is quickly becoming an essential coverage as well. Most small businesses can also benefit from commercial auto insurance.

Not necessarily. Commercial general liability coverage typically includes coverage for injuries or property damage to third parties that occur at the business premises or are the result of your business operations. If your business rents space, it may also include tenants legal liability, which protects your business if you damage the rented space.

There are other types of liability that may be excluded from CGL, including:

  • Advertising injury (things like copyright, slander, libel and invasion of privacy)
  • Product liability (injuries or damage caused by products you manufacture or sell)
  • Professional liability (injuries or damage caused by bad advice or poor professional judgment)
  • Cyber liability (costs arising from data breaches and cyber hacks)
  • Non-owned auto liability (injuries or damage caused by one of your employees using a vehicle not owned by the business for business purposes)
  • Pollution liability (injuries or damage resulting from a sudden escape of a gas or liquid)

Business insurance is a little different than say auto insurance, in that there is no easy way to get a dozen quotes from a dozen different insurance companies. It is important to work with a broker that has contracts with a variety of commercial insurers, so you can feel certain that they will be able to find you coverage that is right for your business. Some commercial insurance companies love to insure contractors but won’t cover a cannabis shop. Our commercial insurance specialists at Mitch have relationships with dozens of the top business insurers in the country. They will sit down with you to make sure that they thoroughly understand the nature of your business, and then will likely get quotes from 2 or 3 insurers that they know have the right coverages for you at rates that work within your budget.
